Sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa sits at the heart of the global water crisis. Of the 696 million people worldwide without basic access to clean water, more than 403 million — over half — live here. For families in remote communities, daily water collection means long journeys, unsafe sources, and constant health risks that trap generations in poverty and illness.
Nowhere is clean water harder to come by than here.
Only about a third of people in Sub-Saharan Africa have safely managed drinking water at home. That's the lowest of any region on earth, though it has climbed from 26% in 2015 to 32% in 2024. So roughly 2 in 3 people still go without.
Some draw their water straight from a river, a pond, or a stream, with nothing in between. That's still about 6% of the whole region.
The gap between town and village is the widest anywhere: a 35-point difference in basic water access between urban and rural areas.
At the current rate, the region won't catch up for generations. The UN says global progress would need to run 8 times faster to reach safe water for all by 2030, and Sub-Saharan Africa has the furthest to go.

In much of Sub-Saharan Africa, safe groundwater lies deep below the surface — beyond the reach of a traditional hand pump — requiring complex, higher-cost drilling. neverthirst works with trusted local partners to design multi-year Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programs tailored to each region. Each program is built with community participation, trained Water User Committees, and ongoing monitoring for long-term sustainability.
Alongside the water crisis is a deeper spiritual need. In this region, the majority of people remain unreached, and the Church is a small, often persecuted minority. neverthirst works through trusted local partners to bring water infrastructure alongside the gospel. Local pastors and churches are equipped to participate in program activities — building trust, dignity, and lasting transformation. Our work meets urgent physical needs while responding to deeper spiritual hunger.
