How much does it cost to build a well?

How much does it cost to build a well?

Short answer: a single community water point costs between $5,000 and $50,000. A hand pump in a place with shallow groundwater sits at the low end. A solar-powered borehole feeding tap stands across an entire village sits at the high end. Large piped systems that serve thousands of people can pass $500,000.

That’s a wide range because the term “well” can mean several different things.

What people mean by “well”

The picture in your head is probably a hole in the ground with a hand pump on top. That’s one kind of water project, and in the right conditions it’s the cheapest.

But in some regions, groundwater sits at different depths. In some regions it’s just 60 feet down. In others, it’s more than 1,000. Some communities live on rock where drilling is impossible and water has to come from a protected spring above the village. Some projects bring water to a school, which means taps, handwashing stations, and toilets.

Across every context we work, the cost of a project depends greatly on what kind of water project the community needs. Here’s each type:

Cost by project type

These are the price points neverthirst’s local partners are working with right now. They’re reviewed each year and bracketed in $5,000 increments.

Hand pump: $5,000

A borehole fitted with a manual pump. Works where groundwater is shallow and the community is small, serving roughly 60 to 100 people. Prioritized in isolated villages unlikely to get connected to a piped system for a very long time, where the main water source is surface water or a shallow open well. Common across South and Southeast Asia.

Mechanized borehole: $15,000 to $25,000

A deeper borehole fitted with a submersible pump, often solar-powered, feeding a storage tank and tap stand. Works where groundwater sits too deep for a hand pump, serving 75 to 250 people depending on the region. The added drilling depth, pump, and solar array account for most of the extra cost.

WASH in Schools: $5,000 to $50,000

Connects a school to clean and living water and adds handwashing stations, new toilets where needed, and hygiene training. The range is wide because it depends on whether the school connects to a larger piped system already being built, and whether water treatment happens at the school or back at the source. Serves 100 to 700 students plus families nearby.

Gravity-fed piped system: $25,000

In mountain communities where drilling won’t work, a protected natural spring above the village feeds pipes that run downhill, giving every household its own tap. Gravity does the work, so there’s nothing to power and little to maintain. Serves 125 to 350 people.

Tap stand on a piped system: $25,000

In much of Sub-Saharan Africa, a single deep borehole feeds a solar pump and a tower-mounted holding tank of 10,000 to 15,000 liters, and gravity carries the water through underground pipe to tap stands nearby. $25,000 funds one tap stand on that network, serving around 500 people.

Tap stand on a large piped system: $50,000

Same idea, but much bigger scale: the borehole goes down as deep as 1,000 feet, a far larger solar array powers the pump, and water fills a standalone reservoir of 50,000 to 75,000 liters before miles of pipe carry it to 8 to 12 tap stands across the whole village. $50,000 funds one tap stand on that larger network, serving around 500 to 1,000 people.

Why the same well costs $5,000 in one place and $25,000 in another

Four things move the number.

Depth. Drilling cost scales with how far down the water is. A 60-foot borehole and a 1,000-foot borehole are different jobs with different rigs.

Geology. Rock, sand, and clay drill differently. Some ground needs casing the whole way down. Some sites come up dry and have to be re-sited, which is a cost even when it goes well.

Distance and terrain. Remote communities mean long hauls for pipe, cement, pumps, and drilling equipment. Rainy seasons can close roads for months. Mountain villages sometimes need materials carried in by hand.

Technology. A hand pump is cheap to install and cheap to fix. A solar submersible pump costs more up front and lasts longer, and it’s the only option when water is deep. Local partners pick the technology the ground can support and the community can maintain.

Ultimately, communities with the greatest need for clean water are often also the most expensive to reach, keeping many organizations from serving them. But, through our local partners, we reach some of the hardest to reach with the best fitted and most sustainable solutions.

What the price should include

A water point that only covers drilling and hardware is underpriced. Here’s what a complete project budget covers:

  • Site survey and hydrogeological assessment (only major piped water systems) before construction begins
  • Water quality testing, before and after
  • Construction, materials, and transport
  • Hygiene and sanitation training for the community
  • Training a water committee to handle upkeep, and setting up a repair fund
  • Training and resources for the local pastor or church leaders involved in the project
  • Monitoring visits after completion, for 5 years

If you’re comparing project costs across different organizations, consider what accompanies drilling and hardware costs. More affordable well projects that skip the research and follow up are a completely different product.

Cost per person

Project costs vary so much by geography that they’re hard to compare across organizations. Cost per person is steadier.

At neverthirst, $50 serves one person with clean and living water. That figure covers the hardware, training, reporting, and monitoring for a period of 5 years. It’s a blended average across every project type and region, so a single project can land above or below it. A $25,000 tap stand serving 500 people works out to $50 per individual. A $5,000 hand pump serving 60 comes in higher, but the average holds across the whole program.

Every village is different, and in some of our programs, we will have a 5 year goal to provide water access to everyone in a community. This means we don’t skip villages just because they are smaller. The same applies to schools.

What a cheap well actually costs

The real cost of a water project shows up years later.

Across sub-Saharan Africa, roughly 1 in 4 hand pumps is out of service at any given time, according to a 2019 review of functionality data from 47 countries. In 2015, that worked out to about 175,000 broken water points. The usual causes are ordinary ones: a worn part with no money set aside to replace it, no one in the village trained to do the repair, and no one from outside coming back to check.

That’s why training is always part of the project, and why the community commits up front to its own plan for paying for repairs, whether that’s a repair fund raised before construction or a water tariff agreed on from day one. It’s why neverthirst’s local partners monitor every water point for at least 5 years after it’s built. And it’s why the community owns the system from day one. A water committee that maintains its own pump is the difference between a project that works in year 8 and one that’s a concrete slab with a broken handle.

How long it takes

Most projects take 12 to 18 months from funding to completion. Site selection, community agreements, the rainy season, drilling, testing, construction, and committee training all take time. Your report, with GPS coordinates and photos from the community, arrives after the water is flowing.
